goodbye!
Mailexpire is shutting down.

When I first set up mailexpire in 1999 it felt good. After years of bitching about spam, I was finally doing something about it. Taking a tool which I had developed for my own use, sticking a web front end on it and making it available to anyone who wanted it.

I was amazed at how it took off and how soon it was being used and reviewed all over the world. Over the years, others launched other services in the same sort of space. Something of a minor revolution was happening. People were taking control of their inboxes.

Now, a decade and a half later, it's a different world. Spam filters have improved. Download speeds have improved, so you are no longer watching a progress bar as your mail is downloaded. Flat rate charges mean you are no longer paying to download each spam message. There are now other services available to give you a temporary email alias. Mailexpire is no longer needed as much as it was.

Mailexpire has always been a free service, and while donations occasionally came in (thanks!), they never came close to even a small fraction of the running costs. Since 1999, my life has changed, and priorities are different. I need to devote my time and money to other things. So, as of today, I am no longer offering the facility to create new mailexpire aliases.

Any existing aliases will continue to work as normal until the end of March. After that, no further mails will be forwarded.

It's been a fun journey, and I learned a lot on this project. And you put up with a few bumps in the service along the way. For your patience and support, I thank you. Now, I urge you to look elsewhere for your mail forwarding services. There are many options to choose from.

Best Wishes,

Jack
